Large in size and intimidating, however the male bee is unable to sting and the female is highly unlikely to sting as well.  

Carpenter bees do not eat wood but chew/create the tunnels for shelter and to raise their young.  They prefer to target unpainted pieces of wood such as windowsills, shingles, doors, railings, roof eaves and various other pieces and parts of wood.
